Marie Stopes, women’s rights campaigner and family planning pioneer, first published her controversial sex manual ‘Married Love’ in 1918, revolutionising the way people understood sex, desire, and sexual health. A century on, ‘Dear Marie Stopes,’ uses extracts from thousands of emotionally-charged letters Stopes received in response to the book to explore this unique snapshot of a society’s sex life 100 years ago. The performance takes place inside the Wellcome Collection, home to the archive of letters. The world premiere of Alex Mills' new opera for Tête à Tête: The Opera Festival, commissioned by the Wellcome Centre and developed at the Barbican.
Tickets available here from 27th July.
